A musty smell when you switch on the air conditioner, dark marks near a vent, or water dripping where it should not be are worth paying attention to. So, can air conditioning cause mould? Not by itself. A properly designed, installed and maintained system should help manage indoor humidity. But when moisture is allowed to sit inside or around the system, air conditioning can create the conditions mould needs to grow.

How air conditioning can lead to mould

Mould needs three things: moisture, a surface to grow on, and enough time undisturbed. Dust on a filter, insulation, plasterboard or duct lining can provide the surface. The real issue is usually excess moisture.

An air conditioner cools air by removing heat, and it also removes some moisture from that air. That moisture condenses on the indoor coil and should drain safely away through a condensate line. When the drain is clear, the unit is correctly sized and the system is serviced, this process is normal.

Problems begin when water does not drain, humidity remains too high, or cold surfaces repeatedly collect condensation. That can happen inside the indoor unit, around wall penetrations, near ductwork, or in the room itself.

It is also worth separating mould caused by air conditioning from mould that merely becomes more obvious when the system is running. A leaking roof, plumbing issue, rising damp or poor bathroom ventilation may be the original cause. Air conditioning can circulate odours and spores through a room, but it is not always the source of the moisture.

The most common air conditioning mould causes

Blocked condensate drains

A blocked drain is one of the most common causes of water damage around split systems. Dust, biofilm and debris can build up in the drain line over time. Instead of flowing outside, condensate may back up into the wall-mounted unit and overflow onto the wall, floor or ceiling below.

This is more than an inconvenience. Damp plasterboard and insulation can quickly become a mould risk if the issue is not addressed. Water stains, dripping, gurgling from the indoor unit or a sudden musty smell all deserve a prompt inspection.

Dirty filters and indoor coils

Filters collect airborne dust, pet hair and fine particles. When they are heavily loaded, airflow drops and moisture can linger inside the unit. Dust around a damp coil or drain tray can support mould growth, particularly where maintenance has been missed for several seasons.

Cleaning reusable filters is a straightforward household task, but it does not replace a proper service. The indoor coil, fan barrel, drain tray and pipework are areas that need careful inspection and cleaning by a qualified technician.

Incorrect sizing or poor system settings

A system that is too large for a room can cool the space very quickly, then switch off before it has had enough time to remove humidity. The room may feel cool but still clammy. Over time, that lingering humidity can contribute to condensation and mould on cool external walls, wardrobes and window frames.

On the other hand, an undersized system may run constantly without bringing temperature or humidity under control. The right outcome depends on room size, insulation, window orientation, household use and the layout of the home – not just choosing the biggest unit available.

Running the system extremely cold can also cause trouble. The difference between cool indoor air and warm, humid outdoor air may increase condensation on surfaces around the home. A moderate setting, often around 23 to 25°C in summer, is generally more comfortable and practical than pushing the temperature down as far as possible.

Ductwork and ceiling-space issues

Ducted air conditioning has its own moisture considerations. Damaged, poorly insulated or poorly sealed ductwork can allow warm, humid air to meet cold duct surfaces in the ceiling space. This can create condensation, especially in homes with roof leaks, limited ventilation or insulation issues.

Mould around ceiling vents does not automatically mean the ducts themselves are mouldy. It may be caused by dust, condensation at the grille, or humidity in the room. A proper assessment looks at the full picture before recommending cleaning, repairs or further investigation.

Signs that your air conditioner needs attention

A little dust on a vent is normal. Persistent odours, visible spotting or water are not. Keep an eye out for a stale or musty smell when the system starts, water leaks from an indoor unit, discolouration around vents, weak airflow, unusual noises, or family members experiencing irritation that seems worse while the air conditioner is operating.

These signs do not confirm a mould problem on their own. They do, however, indicate that the system should be checked. Avoid spraying household mould products into vents or deep inside a unit. They may not reach the cause, can leave residue on components, and do not fix a blocked drain or underlying moisture issue.

Can air conditioning cause mould if it runs all night?

Usually, no. Running air conditioning overnight does not cause mould when the system is installed correctly and operating as it should. In fact, using an appropriately sized unit can improve sleep comfort and reduce indoor humidity during muggy weather.

The concern is not the number of hours the system runs. It is whether water is draining correctly, airflow is restricted, or the home has another moisture problem. If a unit smells damp every morning, leaks after extended use or leaves a room feeling sticky, it is time to arrange a service rather than simply changing the timer.

Practical ways to reduce mould risk

Regular maintenance is the most reliable preventative step. Clean filters according to the manufacturer’s guidance, especially during heavy-use periods. Keep outdoor units clear of leaves and debris so the system can operate efficiently, and check that visible drain outlets are not blocked or constantly overflowing near the house.

Inside the home, use exhaust fans when cooking and showering, dry wet washing outdoors where possible, and address roof or plumbing leaks quickly. In rooms that stay humid, a dehumidifier may help, but it should not be used to hide an air conditioning fault or building moisture problem.

For ducted systems, make sure ceiling grilles are clean and securely fitted. If you notice staining around a vent, avoid assuming it is just dust. A technician can check airflow, insulation, condensate drainage and the condition of accessible ductwork to identify the likely cause.

When to book a professional air conditioning service

If there is visible mould inside an air conditioner, recurring water leaks, a strong odour, or staining that returns after cleaning, professional attention is the sensible next step. The system may need a thorough clean, drain repair, component check or investigation of a separate moisture source.

For more significant mould growth on walls, ceilings or insulation, the affected materials may need specialist assessment as well. Air conditioning servicing can resolve issues within the system, but a complete solution must deal with the source of moisture wherever it sits.
